Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader and BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on Wednesday accused the Congress-led Karnataka government of driving the state toward financial instability, claiming its economic policies have brought Karnataka to the “brink of bankruptcy.” Surya’s comments came while he was campaigning for the Maharashtra Assembly elections in Mumbai.
Surya argued that the current government’s alleged “irresponsible economic model” has led to a financial crisis, stating, “The state is now standing on the brink of bankruptcy and economic chaos. The government’s handling of public funds is creating an economic crisis.” He further claimed that the Congress government has turned the Rs 20,000 crore revenue surplus budget presented by the former BJP administration into a revenue deficit of Rs 12,000 crore in just two years.
The BJP MP urged voters in Maharashtra to take heed, warning them that similar issues could arise if Congress gains power in their state. Highlighting what he alleged as unfulfilled pre-election promises, Surya said the Karnataka government’s pledge to provide a monthly stipend of Rs 2,000 to women has yet to be fulfilled, with some beneficiaries resorting to indefinite protests.
“The state government is left with no funds for development,” he said, alluding to budgetary constraints caused by pre-poll promises.
Surya also claimed that Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar recently admitted to funding issues in the state, particularly regarding infrastructure upkeep. According to Surya, Shivakumar twice stated publicly that budget limitations have prevented the government from repairing potholes in Bengaluru, and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who was present during one of these admissions, acknowledged the concern.
